More watercolor practice




I'm finding that there's probably a reason why I've been avoiding watercolor for so long- They are damn complicated! I'm also finding out they are far more dynamic and controllable than I thought, and actually kinda fun to work with. So I'm going to keep playing with them.

Old School

I decided to be less dependent on digital media and start working more using traditional tools- pencil, charcoal, oils, acrylics.
This one is a quick zombie in gouache- What more appropriate to symbolize the "revival" of old techniques than a zombie?

Hopefully this is only the start of something good.

The village

The concept for the snow queen's palace location has changed- I wanted to make all the location visible from the start- you can see gerda's village all the way in the front, the witch's house is within the mountain up the river (the small one with the waterfalls) and the snow queen's palace is all the way up on the massive snowy mountain, a long way ahead.

The area is Alaska, as I chose to bring the story into the world of the inuits.

These are attempts at different types of space- Two rough frames for my initial concept for the snow queen's palace- floating on a glacier all the way in the north pole.

Moving on

After deciding on some rough compositions it was time to design the different elements that would be used in them. These feature anything from a small bush, all the way in the background, to the snow queen's palace.

The Witch


OK, so it's finally done. I changed the pose to make it go with the chicken theme I had in mind. The fur collar was made smaller for the same reason- It makes the silhouette read more like a hen than before, and there's the added plus of having the eyes and face read better, rather than disappear inside the fur.

I went through several variations of face paint to make here look more like a shaman (might put them here later). I also used the red paint to suggest the red skin poultry have on their head.

Oh, some random trivia- This witch is all about fertility and growing magical flower bushes on barren snowy land. So I figured since she was inuit she could use bone, which is a common material they use for construction.

So what I'm getting at is- her staff is a magical whale penis bone.

Finally, an update!

Ok, it's been a while since I put something new here, but it's about time that I start again.

The following posts feature works from one of my classes in Art Center, called Design Process, in which we take a story ("The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen) and bring it to the world of animation feature. Characters, environments, it's all there.



These are rough thumbnails for the character of the witch, a lonely old woman living by herself on the bank of a river in Alaska. When Gerda, the main protagonist, stumbles upon the witch's house in search of her lost friend Kay, the witch decided to do anything in her power to keep Gerda with her, even if it means enchanting her barren surrounding into a magnificent, lush field of flowers.

While still figuring out the shape, I attempted some ideas for costume design. She's an inuit,
so there'll be use of animal hide, furs and colorful beads and tribal graphics.


Further down the line we did a fun little exercise where we "borrowed" a character designer's style to try and understand their process and the way they approach form, volume, line flow. I chose the amazing Nicolat Marlet, and tried to bring my design into his world.


The witch had changed by then from a big bulky character into a more chicken like figure.
I figured her trying to keep Gerda close was sort of like a mother hen incubating an egg.

I went with Marlet's very clear graphic style, his strong use of forms and his use of black and white and plays with texture.


I later went on to trying a few expressions, keeping with the same Marlet-type style. Not sure I pulled it off, but I did learn a lot in the process.



After playing with a different style for a while, I wanted to bring the design closer to how I visualized it. I kept the basic volumes the same because I liked the way they translated through the poses. The costume still needs some figuring out, but it's getting there.
